One day I asked my audience the question, “What do you want your life to look like”? In that instance, I saw an exuberant audience turn into a bunch of subdued people who looked as though they were looking into a far distant land. I immediately realized that my question invoked a hypnotic trance that people had to snap out of because their imagination had instantaneously gone into the creative mode.
Everyone has an image of what they would like their life to look like. Some people would want nothing more than to live the life of luxury that other people would envy. Others would want more of the simple life…they envision living in the country, outside of the hustle and bustle of the big city. Still others can see themselves living on the beach, catching the sun rays, and drinking frozen pina coladas. One thing is for certain, when it comes to answering this question, everyone would like to have a life uninhibited by financial concerns.
Now, let’s turn the question to, “What would you do to have the kind of life you would really like to live”? You already know everything you need to know, to get everything you want. All that’s left is for you to do it. Everything seems so simple, but very little is easy.
There are four apprehensions that are on the top of my list pertaining to the kind of lives nobody wants to live.
- Nobody Wants the Life of Being Alone: Monophobia is the fear of being alone. While most people may not identify this as a personal issue, the truth of the matter is, everyone wants to feel wanted and no one wants to be alone.
- Nobody Wants the Life of Being Broke: Peniaphobia is the fear of being poor, the fear of being broke, or having no money. Bobby Womack sung a song entitled, “Nobody Wants You When You’re Down and Out”, which is usually the case. However, being financially broke is not a physical problem; it is a mental problem.
- Nobody Wants the Life of Being Unhealthy or Sick: Emetophobia is the fear of being sick or unhealthy. People want to be thinner, healthier and happier, but nobody wants to own the actions it takes to get there.
- Nobody Wants the Life of Being A Failure: Atychiphobia, as with all phobias, is an extreme, irrational fear of failure. Whether you want to consider these fears natural, spiritual or mental apprehensions, they keep us from enjoying some aspects of life we really want to. What people often do when they are afraid of failure is nothing!
My response is this. No one is really ever alone if they can enjoy the person they truly are. Although we are created to be social creatures, we are also intrinsically creative in finding ways to connect with others. Our first task is to link the ‘Me, Myself and I’ into one person. Then, you can stop being the person others see or the person you think others will accept, and start being the person you truly are.
Change your thoughts from a fear of being alone to a belief that you are never alone. You will always have God around you, and you will always be loved.
My solution to eradicate this apprehension is first being aware of the fact that everyone wants to be better, but no one wants change. This includes you. A person isn’t broke because of what they don’t know; a person is broke because of what they do know. When your present knowledge is keeping you financially strapped, change your financial information. A person doesn’t grow from what they know; a person expands and grows by learning more.
Instead of a fear of being broke, believe that you will never be without money. The potential to make money resides in you, not in you tangibly possessing it.
The key to avoid capitulating to this damaging lifestyle is to understand the importance of action. Everyone wants to own the result, but no one wants to own the process. Instead of thinking of being sick and unhealthy, circulate your thoughts on being well, healthy and physically fit.
The fundamental need is not survival, but rather to thrive and endure the process of change so that you can either manage, or eradicate the fear that paralyzes you. This is especially so when it involves a change or disruption to the patterns you’ve grown accustomed to. So, instead of thinking of failure, don’t just think but Believe You Will Succeed!
The leader in you is the person who is willing to own not just the result, but the process as well.
